‘A Keto Weight loss program And Intermittent Fasting Helped Me Lose 74 Kilos’

My name is Julie Araya (@sietotallosingit), and I am 37 years old. I live in the Bay Area, California and am a home mom of two. I wanted to be there for my kids so I decided to lose weight and get my type 2 diabetes and fatty liver under control. I’ve lost 74 pounds from a keto diet and intermittent fasting.

Weight has always been a struggle since I was a teenager. I was only slightly overweight in my teenage years, but that was very important to me at the time. When I was 24, I met my ex-fiancé, the father of my two children. I was with him for 11 years. I gained 80 kilos during this time.

The weight gain was partly due to the fact that I was comfortable in the relationship. But my relationship was complicated and I was struggling with depression. I was too preoccupied with my relationship problems and being a mother. I just couldn’t take care of myself.

Eating was my way of dealing with it. I felt unloved and I was trying to get that love from food. I had given myself up. At the age of 32 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver and weighed 220 pounds.

After being medically obese for a decade, I just didn’t feel well. I was always tired. It was hard to do certain things because my weight was in the way. I didn’t feel attractive. I loved clothes but felt I couldn’t wear what I wanted. I was just fed up with this life and wanted to become the version of myself that I always felt was deep inside of me.

After becoming a single mom and recovering from my breakup, I felt mentally in a better place.

So on October 4th, 2020 when I was 36 years old, I finally made up my mind to do something about it.

To be honest, I was motivated to get this revenge body. But my main motivation was my children. I was now a mother becoming sole provider and they needed me more than ever. Given my health problems, I couldn’t stand the thought of what would happen if I didn’t address her.

I had heard of Intermittent Fasting (IF), which cycles between eating and fasting times, and decided to do more research. Seeing that I was not being strict about breakfast or felt it was necessary, I thought I would give it a try. I’ve also seen a lot of people on Reddit and YouTube who practice it with great success.

I follow a 16: 8 schedule, so I eat within an 8-hour window and fast for 16 hours at night and into the next day. At the same time, I also opted for a ketogenic diet, a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet to help manage my type 2 diabetes. When I switched to a keto diet, it really helped with my cravings. In fact, I was able to eat less and was satisfied with the food I ate.

I eat a lot of protein and vegetables, eggs and berries are my favorite fruits these days. I left out a lot of carbohydrates and sugar. (I was addicted to sugar before.) And it worked! I stopped my diabetes medication and it is considered in remission. My fatty liver has also improved.

I’ll eat that in one day now.

  • Breakfast: Fast; I drink coffee with half and half sugar-free sweetener every day.
  • Having lunch: Bunless burger.
  • Dinner: Baked chicken with vegetables. I also love quesadillas and chicken salad wraps or tacos, all with low-carb tortillas of course.

While I don’t have a workout routine that involves going to the gym to keep active, I enjoy going outside with my kids.

We do a lot of walks and hikes, and I also occasionally roller-skate.

These three changes have led to my success in losing weight.

    1. I started intermittent fasting. I ate all the way until 1am to 2am! By doing IF and sticking to a window, I was able to save a lot of calories that way. I found it easier to know when to eat so I didn’t have to count so many calories.
    2. I implemented a keto / low carb eating plan. Eating this way helped bring my diabetes into remission, which was one of my big goals. It also reduced my candy cravings, which was my greatest weakness and my downfall.
    3. I focused on taking care of myself. Whether it is getting my nails done or just spending time for myself, it helps me feel better. When I feel better, I can better keep up with the new lifestyle because I now see everything as taking care of myself.

I lost 150 pounds in nine months.

I am on my journey for a year but tried to keep my weight off before I lose the rest to reach my goal.

It’s amazing to have more energy and improved health, and to be able to more easily do things that were difficult before. It’s nice to be able to shop anywhere and look forward to dressing up and being seen instead of wanting to hide from the world. I love my new self-confidence. Weight loss doesn’t fix everything, and it’s a journey into self-love too. And caring for myself as a mom is one way of looking after my children. The journey can be tough at times, but it’s definitely worth it!
