Dementia: Sleep, train, nutritious diet and mind exercise can decrease threat

Around 850,000 people in the UK have dementia. And that number is set to climb even higher by 2025, reaching more than a million, reports the NHS. Unfortunately, there is still no surefire way to prevent this syndrome as research is still trying to understand how it develops. However, there are a few ways you can reduce your risk.

Research shows what’s good for your heart is good for your brain, explains the NHS. So, good sleep, exercise, and a healthy diet can all help reduce your risk.

One additional thing that is only beneficial to your brain is keeping your brain active, also known as brain exercise.

Good sleep

Research shows that there is a link between poor sleep and dementia.

The latest study published in the National Institutes of Health found that people between the ages of 50 and 60 who only slept six hours or less were 30 percent more likely to be diagnosed with dementia later.

The study looked at nearly 8,000 people from the UK and compared data from “normal” sleepers who slept more than seven hours with those who did less rest.

Their results suggest that less mid-life sleep may lead to a higher risk of later cognitive decline.

However, the researchers cannot confirm whether sleep is the cause of dementia or whether it is just one of the early signs of persistent cognitive decline.

Dr. Séverine Sabia added, “While we cannot confirm that too little sleep actually increases the risk of dementia, there are many reasons why a good night’s sleep could be good for brain health.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, physical activity is one of the “best” ways to reduce the risk of dementia.

They recommend exercising, as just 10 minutes at a time is good for your health.

The NHS recommends at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week. This can be anything from brisk walking to dancing.

The most important thing is to avoid long periods of sitting. Sit less and try to take the stairs when you can, the health department says.

Brain training

Keeping your brain active is a fun way to reduce your risk of cognitive decline.

Some of the activities listed by the charity to try out are:

  • Studying for a qualification, course, or fun
  • Learn a new language
  • Solve puzzles, crosswords and quizzes
  • Play card games or board games
  • Read or write challenging books.

Performing the brain exercises you choose on a regular basis is critical to making it work.

The charity says, “It’s important to find something to keep up with.”
