Most dietary guidelines for athletes are based solely on research on men.

However, this study by Tanja Oosthuyse and her colleagues underlines the importance of the different dietary guidelines for men and women.

While the protein supplement helped exercise intensity in women, it did not improve exercise intensity and instead had a modest negative effect in men.

This made the exercise feel more difficult for them as their body worked harder to break down the supplement than if they just drank plain water.
