Twitter burst out laughing when cricketer Ravindra Jadeja made a fun version of the keto diet by sharing a picture of him with a human skeleton model. Jadeja was excluded from the upcoming test series against South Africa because of an injury. He is currently recovering.
While the picture has left internet users in split as the keto diet or the ketogenic diet is believed to be effective in weight loss, here are some facts everyone should know about this age-old eating practice that gained popularity a few years ago.
According to Harvard’s TH Chan School of Public Health, the spread and use of the keto diet can be traced back to the 19th century when it was used to control diabetes. “In 1920, it was introduced as an effective treatment for epilepsy in children who were inactive on medication. The ketogenic diet was also tested and used in closely monitored settings for cancer, diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and Alzheimer’s disease,” it said.
This nutritional practice gained attention as the craze for low-carbohydrate diets grew.
So how does it work? The keto diet alters the body’s reliance on glucose to ketones. Instead of using glucose, which is obtained from foods containing carbohydrates, the body uses ketones, which are obtained from stored fats. Hence the diet derives its name “keto diet”.
When a human body consumes fewer carbohydrates, 3-4 days later, when the body uses up all of the glucose, it begins to break down proteins and fats for energy. This is where weight loss takes place.
“The ketogenic diet has been shown to induce beneficial metabolic changes in the short term,” says Harvard’s TH Chan School of Public Health, adding that a very high-fat diet can be difficult to maintain. Some negative side effects of a long-term keto diet are an increased risk of kidney stones, osteoporosis, uric acid levels in the blood and it can also lead to nutrient deficiencies, it is said.
Experts at the Mayo Clinic highlight the downside of this diet, saying, “While the research is exciting, there is very little evidence that this type of diet is effective or safe in the long run for things other than epilepsy. Also, very low carbohydrate diets are prone to higher side effects like constipation, headaches, bad breath, and more. In order to meet nutritional requirements, many healthy foods have to be omitted, making it difficult to meet your micronutrient needs. ”
Many experts have also said that a keto diet can interfere with bowel movements. While a low-carbohydrate diet can hinder bowel movements, high fat intake can, on the other hand, lead to excessive secretion of bile, causing loosening of stool and thus frequent occurrence.
Another major downside to the keto diet is the pungent smelling keto breath, which is very similar to nail polish removers. This unpleasant smell often makes you reach for peppermints.
Hence, those seeking weight loss should not go on a keto diet due to limited knowledge. Consult your doctor, discuss any past illnesses you have, and then include suggestions about this nutritional practice.
