Ketone dietary supplements could also be a brand new therapeutic technique for enhancing mind well being in overweight folks

New research published in the Journal of Physiology has shown that ketone supplements may be a new therapeutic strategy to protect and improve brain health in people with obesity.

It is known that obese people are at greater risk of developing cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases.

This new study found that giving a ketone supplement three times a day for 14 days improved blood flow to the brain and aspects of cognitive function, such as working memory and processing speed, in obese adults.

Dietary supplements that specifically contain the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (B-OHB), which are safe for human consumption, are relatively new and have mainly been studied for physical performance (in sports and the military).

Ketone supplements have been shown to be beneficial for older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia.

In this study, the researchers expanded these results by showing that ketone supplements could be a new therapeutic strategy to protect and improve brain health in obese people who are at risk of developing neurocognitive impairment.

Obese adults voluntarily took either a ketone supplement or a flavored placebo supplement 15 minutes before each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) three times a day.

The study was a so-called randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study – in other words, participants were randomly assigned to take the supplement or placebo for the first 14 days and then switched to the other condition for another 14 days -Day period. This allows the researchers to compare reactions to the dietary supplement with a placebo in the same participants.

The researchers provided participants with all meals and snacks for both 14-day intervention periods.

They measured the cognitive function with validated tests via an application on an iPad and measured the cerebral blood flow with a so-called duplex ultrasound of the extracranial (neck) arteries.

They also took blood samples to measure hormones, which are like fertilizers for the brain, help neurons grow, and improve cognitive functions.

After validation with a larger group of people, we expect that these dietary supplements can be used to protect and improve brain health in people with obesity. “
