As this is our special food issue, I thought it appropriate to expand the subject to these pages, but perhaps not in the way you might expect. I’m not going to be talking about the ingredients, I’m going to talk about cooling, because keeping some part of your skincare well-chilled is a great way not only to make the application more refreshing, but it can also help puff and soothe, as well as give away something, to get blood circulation going .
Also, some of the recent launches that I like to use (especially on warmer days) have been specifically designed with the intention of keeping them in the refrigerator. One is that Patchology Serve chilled rosé Assortment with a great face Sheet mask (£ 8) and Eye gels (£ 14 for five, both selfridges.com) with moisturizing hyaluronic acid and resveratrol to help fight inflammation. Personally, I keep eye masks in the kitchen fridge year round, but these are my current pick and make my eyes look refreshed and brighter.
Skin proud also launched a product designed to be kept cool. Frozen over (£ 16.95, asos.com) has a gel-to-ice texture and is a great moisturizer – it also has the reliable ingredient hyaluronic acid to get the job done. Store in the refrigerator or in the freezer for an hour, or ideally three, for extra detoxifying and calming power – as well as an invigorating wake-up call. Apply in the morning or throughout the day. But if you let it freeze for longer than the allotted time, the texture becomes more like that of a mushy drink.
Another skin care staple that I have in my refrigerator is From Mamiel Dewy Facial Spray (£ 52, demamiel.com). Think of this as a squirtable serum that you can use to add moisture to your skincare routine, soothe the skin, and in addition to makeup during the day. With its high proportion of Persian rose water, it is also a wonderfully fragrant pick-me-up.
According to John Lewis, body sprays have a moment with sales of many, up 275 percent year over year. Keeping them cold makes them even more refreshing to use. I am in love Tom Ford Neroli Portofino full body sprayAlways a great summer scent with sun notes of bergamot, lemon and orange blossom (£ 55, johnlewis.co.uk or tomford.co.uk).
Tools such as Face roller made of rose quartz, are also great when used chilled. I like The white society‘s (£ 30, thewhitecompany.com). Cryo facial tools are also becoming more popular. Stored in the freezer, they have the added benefit of promoting lymphatic drainage when rolled over the face. This stylish stainless steel design by Oxygen boutique (£ 55, Oxygenboutique.com) is my new go-to place.
