Psychological well being clinic opens as seasonal melancholy numbers start to extend

JACKSON, miss. (WLBT) – Right Track Medical Group opened its newest mental health clinic in Flowood on Wednesday, just before the holiday season.

The holidays are meant to be a time of love, exultation, and joy. For many Americans, however, it’s just the opposite.

Right-track therapist Katherine Baggett said seasonal depression doesn’t just affect those who have already been diagnosed with depression.

“Everyone gets a little bit depressed in winter, even if they’re not necessarily clinically depressed,” said Baggett.

Baggett said depression during vacation is not uncommon due to certain triggers that many experience.

“You worry about the added stress of having family, traveling, shopping for gifts. It is one of those times when we feel the loss of loved ones especially, ”said Baggett.

Since many of these triggers are inevitable, it is important to identify signs of depression in both others and yourself early on.

“You’re looking for more stress, you’re looking for increased anxiety, increased irritability. Just a generally heightened sensitivity is what you are looking for in yourself, ”said Baggett.

Flowood Mayor Gary Rhoads hopes the new clinic will help those who need advice right away so that nobody has to wait for a consultation.

“If you break an arm, see a doctor right away. However, if you have a mental health problem, wait 3 to 4 weeks. You know, time is of the essence when it comes to mental health, ”said Rhoads.

Rhoads and Baggett said that with more psychological counseling now available, they hope that people who normally avoid therapy will seek help.

“It could just be the holidays and you might just shake it off when it’s done, but there can be things that stay,” said Baggett.

“Too many people are giving up hope today and I think these people can help lead the way to hope,” said Rhoads.
