Smurfit Kappa targets e-commerce well being and wonder with sustainable packs
The customizable eHealth & Beauty portfolio includes sustainable, paper-based packaging solutions ideal for shipping sensitive products such as fragrances, cosmetics, and skin and hair care products, as well as tamper-evident packaging for vitamins, nutritional supplements and sports nutrition.
The health and beauty e-commerce market in Europe is one of the largest and fastest growing categories with a value of 17.6 billion%), this growth offers a significant opportunity for retailers, from an estimated total value of e-commerce Retail market to benefit from 380 billion euros.
With the increasing demand in the e-commerce market for health and beauty, so too do consumers’ expectations of higher quality and sustainable packaging, as well as delivery protection. Recent research by Smurfit Kappa shows that consumers continue to push for higher delivery standards. The research revealed:
- 80% expect their package to arrive in perfect condition
- 59% prefer packages that are easy to open
- 74% say easy returns is important for their convenience
- 69% prefer paper-based packaging for reasons of sustainability
The new portfolio addresses key challenges for the e-commerce supply chain, including product damage, void filling, and sustainability, to ensure an improved consumer and brand experience. Importantly, the entire portfolio has been designed to meet the standards of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA), thereby facilitating Amazon’s packaging certification process for certain products.
Arco Berkenbosch, Vice President for Innovation and Development at Smurfit Kappa, commented on the announcement: “In the health and beauty segment, speed-to-market needs to be combined with a unique consumer experience. Our new eHealth & Beauty range of products offers exciting, functional and bespoke packaging solutions suitable for businesses of all sizes, from entrepreneurs to globally recognized brands. This range of packaging is the best way to strengthen your e-commerce sales approach. “
One of the portfolio innovations is the Tamper Evident Pack, which has a double self-locking mechanism that does not require adhesive tape and is easy to return. Another solution is the Beauty Sleeve, which is specially designed to protect small products like skin care and cosmetics, while the curved edges create a unique look that enhances the brand experience. According to Smurfit Kappa, the distinctive design of the Hammock Fit offers a premium unboxing experience while also providing additional protection for the products along the supply chain.
In addition to the eHealth & Beauty range, Smurfit Kappa says it also offers a variety of automated solutions to optimize the packaging process and accelerate company growth. The introduction of this new portfolio is the latest addition to Smurfit Kappa’s range of Better Planet Packaging solutions that aim to have a positive impact on billions of supply chains and consumers by reducing the environmental footprint of packaging and its mark on the planet.
