Citing two studies from 2017, Medical News Today found that both “reported that a ketogenic diet low in carbohydrates and protein increases the average lifespan of mice and improves animal health as they age”.
The first study, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, found “that long-term exposure to a ketogenic diet, fed every other week from middle age, reduced midlife mortality and preserved memory in aging mice. ” In the second study, which appeared in Cell Metabolism, the researchers found that the keto diet not only “extends longevity,” it also “[m]Ear function, memory and muscle mass “in animals.

Lilianne R. Mujica-Parodi, PhD, professor at Stony Brook University, led a 2020 study that also supported the idea that a low-carb diet can prevent age-related brain problems. “The good news is that dieting may prevent or reverse these effects by mitigating the effects of progressive hypometabolism by swapping glucose for ketones to fuel neurons,” Mujica-Parodi said in a statement.
